Bajrangi Fails To Beat Ek Tha Tiger On Day One But...
Isn't Bajrangi Bhaijaan (BB) a better film than Ek Tha Tiger (ETT)? Isn't it supported by better performances than the latter? Compare Salman Khan's histrionics in the two films. Or Kabir Khan's direction, for that matter and you'll say Bajrangi Bhaijaan is miles ahead of Ek Tha Tiger.

So why did BB fail to beat ETT on Day 1? The superstar's highest opening day collection remains Rs. 32.90 crore, recorded by his 2012 Eid release ETT. In contrast, BB garnered Rs. 27.25 crore yesterday.

Surprised? Let's find out from the experts why this has happened.

Trade analyst Taran Adarsh says, "Don't forget that Ek Tha Tiger released on August 15, which is a national holiday. That was an Eid-cum-Independence Day release."

Trade analyst Komal Nahata gives his reasons, "Look, Bajrangi Bhaijaan is a family drama. Ek Tha Tiger was an action film with a strong love story. A family drama can never draw more collections than a love story/action film on Day 1. But Day 2, 3 and 4 of Bajrangi will be more than that of ETT."

Exhibitor Manoj Desai says, "So what if the collections are lower than Ek Tha Tiger on Day 1? Wait till Monday and you will know who won. All my three theatres - Gaiety, Galaxy and Maratha Mandir - don't have a single empty seat. And mind you, I hadn't even screened Ek Tha Tiger in Galaxy. I had screened it only in Gaiety. This time, I knew I have to release it in both the theatres. Public ko bahut maaza aa raha hai."

Does that mean that this Eid release will amass more than the 2012 release in totality? "Yes, I expect it to cross Rs. 250 crores," Nahata says rather confidently.

Adarsh too is of the same view. He endorses, "I think it may surpass Rs. 300 crore, the word of mouth is very strong."

An official from Fun Republic (Andheri), on request of anonymity, however says that he would prefer to monitor today's collections before making any statement. "We didn't sell as many tickets yesterday as we had expected to. The numbers are picking up today, let's see what happens," he states.

So, will Bajrangi Bhaijaan go on to become Salman's biggest money-spinner? Let's wait and watch.
